After an action-packed vacation in the Caribbean, a stay on Marlon Brando’s private islandand a visit to Milan and the Tuscan countryside, the Obamas have certainly found ways to keep themselves busy in their time away from the White House.
Meanwhile, everyone’s been left wondering where the former first family would eventually lay down roots. DC? California? New York?
Now, the Chicago Sun Times reports that the former president and first lady Michelle Obama have purchased the home they have been renting in Kalorama for $8.1 million.
“Given that President and Mrs. Obama will be in Washington for at least another two and a half years, it made sense for them to buy a home rather than continuing to rent property,” Obama spokesman Kevin Lewis told the Sun-Times.
Though they will continue to own their home in the South Side Kenwood community of Chicago, according to a source. The Obamas first purchased the stunning Georgian revival residence for $1.65 million back in 2005, reports the Chicago Tribune.
After leaving the White House, the Obamas settled into this 8,200 square-foot home in DC’s elite Kalaorama neighborhood (also home to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner) so that youngest daughter Sasha could finish school.
Kalorama has been home to past presidents, including Woodrow Wilson, William Howard Taft, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding and Herbert Hoover–all living there before or after their time at the White House.
In case you forgot, the Obamas’ bright and airy Kalorama abode was designed by Michael S. Smith and comes with eight bedrooms and nine-and-a-half bathrooms, plus a spacious kitchen with marble countertops, multiple living spaces each with its own fireplace, not to mention ample outdoor space for entertaining and lounging.
Talk about a keeper. Here’s just a taste of the home.
